This ass has been outrunning the consequences for so long they have begun to believe they are immortal. The warning signs pile up, ignored. The bills, the symptoms, the quietly worsening situation, all waved off with a confidence that borders on performance art. Reality knocks, politely at first, and they do not answer. It knocks louder.
