This ass understands that a marked course is really more of a gentle suggestion, and they have taken the liberty of editing it. The cones pointed one way. They found a more efficient way. The tangent, they will explain, was simply optimized, straight through a parking lot, a hedge, and possibly someone's backyard. Their finishing time is spectacular and their route is a work of creative fiction. It is not cheating, they insist, genuinely wounded. It is initiative. A visionary of the shortcut, redrawing every course to their own advantage and crossing the line first, technically, in a race that was, technically, a slightly different distance for everyone else.
